Fiji
Culture
Indigenous Fijian n Islanders are recoginised worldwide
for their friendliness, fine crafts, plentiful feasts
and their traditional song and dance, known as mekes,
Fijian crafts of note are woven mats and baskets,
hand molded pottery and wood carvings. Indigious Fijians
are predominantly in villages along rivers or coasts
with population varying from anywhere between 50 to
400 people. A heredity chief heads the village, where
generally traditions remain intact. Indo-Fijians are
dominantly descendants of indentured laborers recruited
principally from Bengal and Bihar around a century
ago and mostly live in the towns and small settlements
in sugarcane growing regions. Fiji shares many habits
with the south pacific islands perhaps the most notable
of which is if you are in Fiji you are on “Fiji
Time” Which translates “no hurry, if you
wait , it will come sooner or later’.
